Coaches Corner: Q & A with Bonney Lake Football Coach Chad Barrett

Patch spoke with Bonney Lake head football coach Chad Barrett about his team's 3-0 start.

The Bonney Lake football team is off to a 3-0 start on the season with all three wins coming in contests decided by six points or less. Patch sports editor Mike Baldwin spoke with Panthers head coach Chad Barrett on Wednesday and got his thoughts on how the team is doing at this point in the season.

The team has been involved in three close games so far. What has been the key for you guys in pulling out those wins?

Just making enough plays to win a game, believing that we’re going to win and just finishing what we started.

Has winning those close games helped the teams’ confidence?

You always feel good when you win close games, because, often times, the ball bounces one way or another. Right now, the ball is bouncing our way and we’re playing well when we need to and when the bottom line comes, we’re finishing the game and we’re winning the game.

When you looked at the team before the season, is this where you thought the team would be after three games?

You always think you’re going to be 3-0, that’s just what it is. That’s all you can ask. The kids have worked hard over the off-season and every year since I’ve been here and it’s the third year now, and they understand the expectation and the work-ethic and the drive and everything else and they’ve done that and it’s showing.

Quarterback Chris Brown has gotten off to a hot start. Talk about the way he has been playing so far.

Chris has done really a good job of reading his keys and minimizing mistakes is the biggest thing. He’s getting better every week. He’s progressed very well from last year to this year and it’s exactly what you want. He’s doing a great job so far. He’s still got a long way to go, he’s only a junior. He can tell you too, he’s not where he needs to be right now at all, but, just like everybody on our team, hard work and preparation and getting better every week is going to pay off.

In your last game, you guys were able to get the running game going more. Is that something you’re looking to do more, have a little more balance?

You always want balance, but you do what you got to do to win the game. If they’re out there to stop the pass, then we’ll run. If they’re going to stop the run, then we’ll pass. That’s the nature of the offense and why it works well and the kids just have to execute. It’s not like we’re just a throwing team. Yeah, we’ve thrown for all these yards and everything else, but the bottom line is we have the ability to run and pass. We have a very good nature of an offense.

Bonney Lake plays next against Lincoln (1-2) at Sunset Chev Stadium on Friday at 7 pm.
