TONIGHT: Input Sought On Proposed Boundary Changes For School Board Directors

Public hearing to be held Oct. 5 to discuss plans borne of new Census data.

In an effort to gather feedback on proposed changes to the school-board director boundaries, the Sumner School Board will hold a public hearing from 4-6 p.m. on Oct. 5 at the Central Administration Office.

The proposed boundary changes are based on 2010 Census data.

The Sumner School District has five school-board director districts. Although all members are elected from the district at-large and represent the entire district, each board position must come from one of the five districts.

According to state law, school districts have eight months from the receipt of census data to develop a plan for adjusting school-board director district boundaries to balance the population within each district.

Since the 2000 Census, the Sumner School District has increased by 9,368 people, said a news release from the district. Growth to the south in Districts 1, 2 and 3 has created an imbalance in all director districts.

According to the news release, the proposed boundary adjustments would ensure that each director district contains 20 percent of the school district's total population.
