Maple Lawn PTA Sponsors Family BBQ to Bid the School Adieu

Bring the family to Maple Lawn Elementary School tonight for a community BBQ and fundraiser to help remodel the playground.

While is scheduled for their facilities makeover, one element isn’t included in the capital campaigns remodel project – the playground.

“We’ve had the same playground equipment since the ’50s… and the [capital campaign] money doesn’t support a new playground,” said Nancy Dumas, who represented the Maple Lawn PTA at the May 16 Sumner city council meeting.

While Maple Lawn is under renovation in the next school year, students will move to . To say farewell to Maple Lawn the PTA organized a luau BBQ and family party tonight, with festivities kicking off at 6 p.m.

There will be a photobooth, food and a DJ spinning sock hop tunes. Families can eat at the BBQ for only $2 a hot dog meal, or $4 for a hamburger meal.

The party will feature an impromptu garage sale, which was organized by Maple Lawn staff and faculty and will include personal items they’ve purchased for their classrooms, like chairs, lamps and tables. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the playground fund.

The PTA dug into their events budget to sponsor the event and all profits will go toward renovating the school playground. Sumner has sponsored three raffle baskets and there will be two plexi donation boxes to pass around for those who want to donate cash or check at the event.

Once Maple Lawn hits the summer season, the PTA playground chair will begin the process of designing the desired playground and crunching cost numbers. The PTA is ready to pursue grant opportunities and other fundraising opportunities.
