Pool Update: School District Plans to Keep Swim Program, Pool Will Remain Open for Summer Lessons

While the School Board hasn't made a final decision on whether or not to close the Sumner pool, the district wants to save the swim program.

It will be some time yet before Sumner and Bonney Lake get answers on whether or not the local swimming pool will permanently close.

While the Sumner School District School Board , the action item won’t appear on their agenda in May or June -- the issue may not go up for another vote until July.

Although a final decision has not yet been reached, the district plans to continue its swim program with or without a local pool, said Ann Cook, communications director for the Sumner School District.

“We believe the priority is finding a place for kids to practice and compete – it’s our intent to keep the high school swim teams,” said Cook. “At this juncture, staff is investing time in identifying potential pool space and availability in neighboring communities.”

The Sumner-Bonney Lake Parks and Recreation Department will go forward with swim lessons at the pool this summer , as it is not affected by this year’s budget. In previous years, the pool was staffed 12 to 15 hours a day with a full staff. This summer, there will be no other staff members on hand to monitor the pool other than swim instructors.
