Public Hearing on Intent to Surplus McAlder Elementary School Site May 8

The Sumner School District decided to officially close the school site in July 2012.

Following up from last summer's report that the Sumner School District decided to close the McAlder Elementary School site, located in Puyallup, the School Board is looking to declare the property as surplus and will be holding a public hearing on the matter on May 8.

Last summer, the district Facilities Planning Committee studied different options for what to do with the building, including mothballing it, repurposing it for community use or leasing it out.

According to the April 2013 edition of the Sumner School District Community Newsletter that arrives in mailboxes this week:

"a determination was made that due to the location and the condition of the facility, it is not suitable for the identified programs. Due to growth management limitations in the valley, it is poorly situated to alleviate future growth in The District. The committee then considered the potential lease or sale of the property, which resulted in the recommendation to Board for surplus and sell of the site."

The hearing on May 8 takes place during the School Board's regular meeting which begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Commons at Bonney Lake High School.
