Enumclaw Boys Dismantle Bonney Lake

The Panthers were overwhelmed by D.J. Hitch and the visiting Hornets.

D.J. Hitch scored a game-high 23 points and Enumclaw used a stifling defensive effort to defeat Bonney Lake 56-32 on Tuesday night at Bonney Lake High School.

The Hornets took control early, but didn’t put the game away until a Hitch scoring outburst in the third quarter. Enumclaw (4-10 overall, 2-3 South Puget Sound League 3A) led 31-16 to start the third quarter, when Hitch quickly made sure the outcome would not be in doubt. Hitch scored 10 points in the third, and the Hornets doubled the Panthers' score going into the fourth quarter, 48-24.

“D.J. has been solid for us all season,” said Enumclaw coach Ted Carlson. "Tonight was no different. We played tough, moved the ball around and created open shots.”

That the Hornets did. They seemed to hit on all cylinders, moving the ball with ease and frustrating Bonney Lake (5-8, 1-4) with tight defense. Hitch also added seven rebounds for the Hornets, who limited Enumclaw to just 16 points in each half.

Terren Houk helped set the tone early for Enumclaw and finished with a productive night that included seven rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks.

“They (The Hornets) are solid, through and through,” Bonney Lake center Mike Gould said. “Their second team is almost as good as their first.”

Gould led the Panthers with eight points and added seven rebounds. Lawrence Williams scored six points, while adding five rebounds and five assists.

Bonney Lake struggled to find the hoop in the first quarter, which set the tone for the rest of the game, mustering just four points in the opening frame. It was evident early on that the Panthers were simply overmatched. After the first, the score was 13-4, and it was the closest the game got as the Hornets simply ran away with it, maintaining a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Both teams pulled their starters in the fourth quarter, as Enumclaw cruised to the victory.
