Rain, Rain, Go Away So Little Leaguers Can Play Today

Uniforms are ready and snack schedules are out, but the weather may pose a problem.

Today, weather permitting, is the first pitch for the Minors Division of the Bonney Lake-Sumner Little League season. Across the area, ballfields and city parks will be filled with kids ages 4 and older sporting their fresh new uniforms: major league hats and matching Little League T-shirts, with baseball pants still free of grass stains on the knees and sliding marks on the hips.

Rain cancelled the April 2 Jamboree,Β  and while the kids were sad to miss their first day on the field, parents were spared having to stand in the early morning Saturday rain. But, even in the cold, watching first-timers hit that ball off the tee and run from third to first then home, makes the damp wind blowing in your face worth it every time.

We are all glad to start the cheering, the reading and re-reading of the snack schedule each morning (just to make sure you don't forget), and trying to remember which field is -E and -1.

I do hate to mention it, but the National Weather Service predicts a 100 percent chance of rain with a high of 49 and winds from 15 to 20 mph today. Be sure to check in with your coach before you hit the road to the big game.

So, as the Dodgers, Yankees, Mariners and many other mini-major league hopefuls fill the ballfields, take extra care when driving past a row of cars alongside the fields, since following a rolling ball or opening a car door into traffic will be happening a bit more often for the next eight weeks.
