PHOTOS: Gladiator Rock'N Run Rumbles into Bonney Lake

The national 5K event had participants plunging into icy waters and jumping over fire at Kelley Farms in Bonney Lake.

How did you spend your Saturday morning?

If you answered with wading through a mudpit, plunging down waterslides, climbing over walls and jumping through fire while wearing a tutu, you're not alone.

Over 2,500 people descended onto Kelley Farm in Bonney Lake this Saturday for the Gladiator Rock'N Run, a 5K event benefiting Autism research.

Organizer Dan Clark, aka "Nitro" from American Gladiators, told Patch he wanted to create an event that was like an "adult Disneyland."

"We work too hard in our every day lives. I wanted to create an experience where people come out and go to war, where they can unleash their inner Gladiator," Clark said. "People crave adventure and this challenges you to get out of your element."

Clark said his event has raised over $100,000 for TACA (Talk About Curing Autism), a foundation close to his heart - several of his friends have children with Autism, he said.

On Saturday, 17 courses (and two "nightmare mystery obstacles") were scattered across Kelley Farm. They included a mud pit, a polar bear plunge with barbed wire across the top of the pool, a slip-and-slide down a hill, spider webs, dumpster diving and a climbing wall that lead to pits of fire to jump across.

Organizers told Patch they chose Kelley Farms to host the event because it's a good place to stage courses that large.

There was also an adult bouncy-house, beer garden, rock show and local vendors to keep spectators busy. Radio personality Danny Bonaduce was on hand to sign autographs and help Clark emcee the event.

Anyone 14 and up could participate and were unleashed on the course in waves throughout the day. They were awarded medals and prizes for best get-ups, plus one free beer, if they were over 21 years old. Patch even saw two participants show up in three-piece suits!

The day wasn't without its pitfalls - East Pierce Fire and Rescue volunteers were on-hand for the event and had to transport one participant to the hospital after she twisted her knee climbing up a wall.

The event is based in L.A. and travels across the United States, with up to 12 shows a year. Next stop on the tour is Oct. 6 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, then it's off to Pheonix, AZ.
