Track & Field: Bonney Lake's Winder on Top in Shotput but is Looking to Improve Discus

Bonney Lake's Adara Winder isn't worried. You could tell by her demeanor in between her throws in the discus event during the Tacoma Invitational track & field meet on Saturday at Lincoln Bowl.

Winder, a junior thrower, has plenty of time to refine her technique.

"I was hoping for 120 but my throws didn’t want to do it," Winder said.

After placing second with a toss of 111-feet, 3 inches behind Eatonville' Courtney Fairhart, Winder rebounded by winning the shotput with a heave of 39-8 1/2. She had a light-hearted attitude, socializing with other high school athletes.

But don't be confused about her competitiveness. She's the Class 3A defending state champion in the shotput, but she wants to improve her mechanics, specifically her footwork, Winder said. Her goal is to reach state after posting a 90-1 in the West Central District meet last year.

Bonney Lake's Lee Boggan placed fourth in the triple jump with leaps totaling 42-5 1/2, a personal best for the senior athlete. He earned a fifth-place finish in the long jump (19-11) as well.

The Gig Harbor boys team scored 66 points to win the meet. The Tides girls' team matched it with a first-place victory tallying 71 points, respectively.
