Cops Reward Kids for Good, Safe Behavior

Local law enforcement are helping to keep summer safety at the forefront for kids by offering incentives like Happy Meals and free ice cream for wearing their bike helmets and life vests.

Wear a life jacket while on the water. Wear a helmet while out biking.

While they seem like easy tasks to help reduce the likelihood of serious injury in the event of an accident, many adults fail to remember them for themselves, let alone for their loved ones.

So local law enforcement are helping to keep summer safety at the forefront for kids by offering incentives like Happy Meals and free ice cream.

Bonney Lake Police shared a photo Tuesday of youngster Chase who was 'caught' by the Marine Services Unit for wearing his life jacket while playing on Lake Tapps Saturday.

Chase and other kids 12 and under who are 'caught' with their life jackets on the water receive a free ice cream cone from Sonic Drive-In and a safety certificate.

Officer Daron Wolschleger said the program was akin to the Safe Rider Citations that both Bonney Lake and Sumner police officers give to kids seen wearing their helmets while out on their bikes that they can use to redeem a free Happy Meal at a participating McDonald's.

The promotion runs through the summer, he said.
