Bonney Lake to Host Relay for Life, Mayor Neil Johnson Selected as Guest Speaker

After 14 years in Sumner, Relay For Life 2012 will be held in Bonney Lake for the first time. Mayor Neil Johnson was selected as special guest speaker for the kickoff event.

Relay for Life 2012 is the year for Bonney Lake to shine as host, with the Walt Disney-themed The Magic of Relay and Mayor Neil Johnson as special guest speaker at the kickoff event.

For the first time, after 14 years in the community, Relay for Life will be held at Bonney Lake High School, instead of Sunset Chevrolet Stadium in Sumner. The stadium will be closed at that time for construction.

Relay for Life 2012 will be held July 27-28 from 6 p.m. to 12 p.m. on the Bonney Lake High School track field.

The kickoff event is scheduled for Thurs., Feb. 9 at Midtown Grill. There, Johnson will address his own battle with cancer, after he with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), a slow-growing type of leukemia.

Since his diagnosis, Johnson and his family have spent countless hours in the hospital during his treatment. He hasn't resigned as mayor, and still attending civic meetings. The community has rallied around Johnson and threw and auction in his honor last year.
