The Sumner YMCA today received a check for $2,300 from (GMCR).  Funds were raised through a GMCR employee golf tournament in August.

“Our Sumner employees are excited about the health and recreation services a YMCA will bring to our community, and we wanted to support the project,” says John Rader, Director of Sumner Operations, GMCR’s Specialty Coffee business unit.  “Our employees work here, live here and have families who also need to be able to work here.  The services Orton Junction will provide and the jobs it will generate are wonderful for the eastern Pierce County region.”

The Sumner YMCA Capital Campaign has raised $5,900,000 in private and public funds for the construction of a new YMCA. Set to open its doors in 2013, the YMCA in Sumner will serve an estimated 15,000 members.

The 50,000- to 70,000-square-foot facility will be centrally located in the area of Wahl Road (166th Ave) and State Route 410. The YMCA and the City of Sumner have been working closely together with a citizen’s advisory group to meet the high demand for a facility in this area. The YMCA will feature a swimming pool, wellness centers, an arts center, exercise and multipurpose rooms, a gym, a community meeting center, a youth drop-in zone, a nursery, and much more. Free Teen Late Nite will offer a safe place for youth every weekend, and aggressive financial assistance will ensure every person has access to a balanced life. Construction of the YMCA in Sumner is estimated to generate 250 jobs while the facility will employ approximately 200 people.
