This Winter, Help Bash Trash at Lake Tapps

There's a lot of rubbage at the bottom of Lake Tapps, and one local resident is asking the community to help him clean it up.

When Jon Bodwell’s 6-year-old daughter filleted her foot on a Crown Royal bottle last year after playing in the lakebed near their Tapps Island home, he realized something had to be done.

After taking his daughter to the emergency room for 15 stiches, Bodwell came up with the idea for Lake Tapps Trash Bash – one day out of the year where the community comes together to clean out the lakebed

In years past, workers have found everything from car parts to furniture at the bottom of Lake Tapps.

“I decided enough is enough. We live on a beautiful lake,” said Bodwell. “But I’m just one single guy with an idea, I need to recruit friends to get this thing going.”

The clean-up event is scheduled all day, Jan. 28 and 29.

Bonney Lake has stepped up as official sponsor of the day and their parking lot will be used as home base, to sign up volunteers and distribute items that will be used to collect trash across the lake. More sponsors are needed for donations of trash bags, gloves and maybe some volunteer T-shirts to say 'thank you' to community members helping out.

Bodwell hopes to place designated dump spots around the lake, so volunteers can unload the trash easily and efficiently. If you think it will be difficult for you to walk around the lakebed but want to pitch in, Bodwell said he’s looking for volunteers to guard the bins and make sure they are properly used.
