Video: YMCA Sign Raised at Future Site in Sumner, Groundbreaking Expected in April 2014

Representatives of the city of Sumner, Sumner Rotary Club, YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties and assorted family, friends and supporters descended on a grassy field just east of downtown Friday morning for the long-anticipated sign-raising event signaling that the corner of 64th Street East and 160th Avenue East will be the new site of the YMCA.

The process has taken anywhere between five and six years, leaders agree, and comments shared reflected gratitude that the process was finally underway.

Bob Ecklund, YMCA President and CEO indicated groundbreaking is expected to be April 1, 2014 and signs indicate the facility should be opening in 2015.

The community's anticipation for the new facility is reflected in some of the notable donations and contributions made so far. YMCA spokesperson Renee Quinn shared these figures:

  • City of Sumner - $5 million
  • Ray and Deanna Dally - $1 million
  • Washington State (grant) - $800,000
  • Rotary Club of Sumner - $250,000
  • Association Board of the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties - $280,000
  • Pat and Karen Duffy - $50,000

Several donors have asked to remain anonymous, she said.

To date, the YMCA has raised $7.75 million toward the Sumner facility. The fundraising goal is set at $10 million.

“The Sumner Y will be 100,000 square feet of healthy living space, including: recreational and warm water therapy pools, group fitness classes, a sauna and steam room, community areas, a teen center, and a fantastic arts center. The Y will serve as a community hub for Sumner, giving people of all ages and backgrounds a place to belong and feel at home,” said Ecklund.
